Etienne Magin: I regularly make short films with friends. My first real short film is « Blake », made in 2010. It was presented for one season in festivals and in 2011, it won the Jury Prize at the Première Marche festival in Troyes. It was a first achievement, self-produced. The film team then created the Tooky Productions association, whose aim is to produce, participate in the production and distribute any type of film, short or feature film. In 2012, I directed the short film “ Metz/Köln/Istanbul ” produced by Tooky Productions. It features two illegal immigrant characters.

 Ciné Klap-Lorraine d’Arts: Etienne, tell us about your short film,  »  Metz/Köln/istanbul « 

Etienne Magin:  The film deals with two illegal immigrant brothers and sisters. He multiplies odd jobs for their survival. This time, he will have to risk expulsion.

The idea for this film comes from a constant desire to talk about the weakest, to place Man before any other concern. What interests me is talking about “little people”, not necessarily big stories. It is in this perspective that I tried to remain as natural as possible in the writing of “Metz/Köln/Istanbul” and to work in subtlety. The camera is constantly on the shoulder and looks for the characters as close as possible. The actors, Bahadir and Roda Canioglu, are friends met at university. The film was written to be played by them.

Not speaking a word of Turkish, the difficulty was to work in this language, whether to translate the original text but also for the filming and especially for the editing. « Metz/Koln/Istanbul » also represented a small technical challenge because it was shot entirely in 1h30. This film is a social drama. I don’t necessarily want to specialize in the genre, but I admit that it’s the form that attracts me the most.

 Ciné Klap-Lorraine d’Arts: What will Lorraine bring you for this next film?  

Etienne Magin:  Lorraine provides me with sets and a setting that corresponds to my desire for above all social cinema.

 Ciné Klap-Lorraine d’Arts: What are your news?  

Etienne Magin:  My short film “Marion, Bâtiment B, chambre 28” was selected by the “Court, mais bon!” website. for broadcast from May 29 to June 5. The story is that of Marion. For her mother, she is a student who goes to college and lives with Julien, her boyfriend. For the men parading in her bed, she sells her services for cheap. For Julien, she’s a pain in the ass but he loves her, and she knows it.

I have another big project which will see the light of day in autumn 2013 and which is in preparation. I am also looking for actors and technicians!

And then, I make various little films to have fun, practice my hand, and try other things…
