Walker, walker, dreamer, traveler and recycler; visual artist and poet. Florent Chopin mixes all media and techniques, paintings, boxes, objects, sculptures, photos, engravings and books.
For Florent Chopin, a singular artist, the studio is the world; art is above all to be in the world.
Prix Fénéon in 1988, Florent Chopin has been the subject of a hundred personal exhibitions.
Florent CHOPIN was born in Caen in 1958. He lives and works in the Paris region.
After studying social sciences, Chopin returned to the fine arts in Caen. He has worked as a professional artist since 1986. He received the Fénéon prize in 1998.
Seeking spontaneous expression, Chopin seeks inspiration by observing daily life and its surroundings, seeing the extraordinary in the ordinary. An avid collector of special objects found in antique shops and flea markets, Chopin has an impressive collection of items which, once put on display, seem to morph and take on different meanings. Taken out of context, a particular object box, for example, seems to reconnect with a lost childhood on an intuitive level while in the next second, or simultaneously, it seems to create a complex and subjective alphabet of symbols belonging to the realms of adulthood. Different subcategories of animals, plants or human domains are reassembled and twisted at their core.
Ultimately, Chopin wants to push the viewer to question and reinterpret his personal reactions and the physical phenomena that surround him. Just as thunder can conjure up images of a fighter jet in the sky, small fragments of ordinary objects can bring us back to hidden tangible memories. Chopin is constantly on the lookout for those fragments that will bring obsolete objects to life; rediscovering lost memories for those with a receptive mind.
